Peter has been leading professional development workshops for
teachers since 1986. He founded Murphy Writing Seminars, LLC & Inservice Solutions to share his successful teaching strategies more widely. Here are
some highlights of his qualifications and honors:
- Twice named a Distinguished Teacher by the White House
Commission on Presidential Scholars
- A Master Teacher for the New Jersey Council for the
Humanities Summer Institute since 1999, Poetry consultant to
The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation since 1986 and advisor to
numerous other arts and educational institutions
- Teacher of high school English,
creative writing and
humanities for 29 years, part time college writing
instructor since 1982
- Recipient of fellowships from The Folger Shakespeare
Library, The National Endowment for the Humanities, The New
Jersey State Council on the Arts, the Corporation of Yaddo,
the Atlantic Center for the Arts and The Virginia Center for
the Creative Arts
- Author of two books of poems,
Stubborn Child and
Thorough & Efficient, and hundreds of poems and
essays
published in The American Book Review, The Shakespeare
Quarterly, Commonweal, English Journal, The New York Times
and many others
- Founder of the
Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway, an annual
conference for teachers, writers and artists, established in
1994
- Longtime reader & rater for Educational Testing Service
- M.A. in English Education from New York University where
he wrote his thesis on teaching writing to high school
students
Amanda Murphy
Assistant Director

Amanda holds an M.A. from the University of Delaware in
Economics and Entrepreneurship for Educators and has led
workshops for students and teachers in venues including the
Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Before joining Inservice
Solutions, Amanda was
Deputy Director of the Delaware Financial Literacy Institute, a
nonprofit educational organization that offers more than 500
free personal finance classes annually. She managed the
organization's finances and technology in addition to creating
personal finance programming including the Money Talk$
newsletter which offers classroom lessons for teachers and
parents. Amanda has also worked in arts management and for a
London-based non-governmental organization.
